If you've ever been in IKEA, then you know that the majority of furniture you have to assemble by yourself. It is quite an interesting process mostly done in the living room. You get all the necessary tools, and all the pieces that you have to put together. If you've never tried it before maybe it is time to do it once.

But there is a different "do it yourself" and it is more and more popular. It is a spiritual self workout. Just to be clear I am not talking about being in the Church. It is about spirtual self-sufficiency outside of the Church. This new spiritual DIY doesn't need God. It is a focus on self salvation through physical exercises, a special mindset, completely relying on one's own skills mixed together with a stimulation of all senses. This DIY has became a new religion. It doesn't have God but it has a god that is oneself.

I believe all of us have met at least one of these people. They call themselves a spiritual. Surrounded by nature, time to listen to electronic music, very often with diet restrictions. It seems that their life is so peaceful and happy.

Unfortunately there is one problem. They cannot achieve everlasting life. Everything that they do begins and ends on earth. There is nothing after that.

When we are with Jesus Christ DIY doesn't work. It is him that does our entire salvation for us. He continues it during every single Mass, perpetuating the same sacrifice and calling us to come to His Father. This is the most beautiful part in our relationship with Jesus. He loves us and he expects the same love in return. Even better, he gives us all grace to return this love. So forget about spiritual DIY and just come to our God with open heart and mind. He will show you the right path to go.

Excellent assessment of a common cultural trend. Every person is an individual and each "spiritual, but not religious" person varies - some are true humanists ... BUT! another common quality that I have observed from this growing sector is that they often confuse social politeness and pleasant, even charming niceties, with being "good". Catholicism has a way more challenging definition of what being "good" and being "virtuous" entails: people like Mother Teresa of Calcutta, Pope John Paul II, Edith Stein, Dietrich Bonhoffer, ......people who completely poured their lives out for the love of God and for service to humanity with Jesus leading them, through the power of the Holy Spirit, for the glory and honor of God the Father. I…
