Beirut Explosion

When I saw a short video of this explosion there was one thought that came to my mind - I hope there are not many people killed. We do not know yet what really happened and probably it will take a while to find it out. In the meantime, there are people that lost their family members, friends, spouses, etc. Any tragedy like that brings a very important question: are we ready to die? I can bet that none of the people killed over there woke up this morning and said "I am going to die today so I have to be ready."

Death always comes as a surprise. It doesn't warn us or send an invitation with all the details of where and when we will die. What happened in Beirut can happen anywhere. Every corner can be our last corner and any crosswalk could be our last. This is the reality of our being on the earth. It might seem a little bit scary but actually it is not.

In the moment when we open our eyes for the first time we are fulfilling something that God prepared for us. If we grow together with Him, every day is a day that we are ready. The entire story changes when we put aside God's plan and try to create our own direction. It is the beginning of many problems and surprises. It is also the beginning of internal fear.

We do not have to live in fear if we have a close relationship with God. Psalm 37:5 says, "Commit your destiny to Yahweh, be confident in him, and he will act." It is such simple advice given to us by David. I know it will not restore the lives of those that died in Beirut, but it helps us to prepare ourselves to leave this world without fear. I met many people that survived World War II. Of course I met them a long time after the war. One thing that always surprised me was the way they talked about death. They had some kind of internal peace about it very often rooted in their deep faith. It was worthy to learn from them how to be ready, prepared for anything.

Let's pray today for all the victims of this explosion in Beirut. Let's pray for all the people that died being surprised that it was time to go.
