Do Not Forget the Most Important Thing

There is an old Russian poem about a lady taking a trip. She is so worried about how many different things she has to take. One of them is a small dog. The lady packs everything at home, goes to the train station, packs everything into the train and takes off. Unfortunately, she forgot to take her small dog from the train station platform. The thing that was most important she left alone.

This poem can teach us a lot about ourselves, about our priorities and about the choices we make. Sometimes we try to collect so many things in our life that we forget about those that are the most important. We are so worried about so many things that we do not see simple solutions. We are trying to catch so many birds by their tails that we end up with nothing.

Lent helps us to see what really matters. It is a week since Ash Wednesday. It is a week into your repentance. I hope you've already made a little progress.

So today let's look at our priorities. There are a few questions you have to ask yourself.

What is the main criteria on which you base your choices? Where is God in those criteria? Do you pay attention to His commandments when you make your choice?

Those questions open your soul to the truth about the values that you hold in your life. If God is always first and you build your life around him, then you are on a good path. Choices made with Him are not always easy but they are definitely the best. Our life is like the packing of the lady from the Russian poem. There are many things we have to take care of. We just have to be sure that we take things in the right order. The material value is not the most important. Our spiritual richness give us the right direction. The more free we are from the luggage of earthly, heavy attachments, the more free we are to enjoy the small things and blessings of our every day. You can make a small exercise. Make a list of things that you have in your house and separate them accordingly: I need and I want. You will see how much difference is between those two lists. It can help you to enjoy the most important elements of your life with Christ.
