Opinions

Probably everyone has noticed that it is so hard to get real news. We have a lot of opinions but not much news. Opinions took over our world. There are opinions about history, about books, politics, reach etc. All of them are more or less correct. It is a different story when we start to make opinions about our faith in God.

In our faith God has revealed Himself to us and presented to us everything we're supposed to know about him. All our dogmas and teachings come from what he told us. And it might sound very simple but there is a problem or rather temptation that comes to us and it is called "an opinion about God".

In my many years of priesthood I met so many people not knowing God but having an opinion about Him. Some of them created really impressive opinions. They knew what God wants, what He thinks about, how He will judge etc. All of their opinions were based only on their thoughts. They didn't know Sacred Scriptures, or Commandments, or the Fathers of the Church. Their entire knowledge of God was based on what they thought about him.

It was a very strange experience for me. After studying theology for so many years, reading so many books focused on God, I still was learning more and more. They just knew all the answers. It was very hard to have a conversation with them because they always knew better than even the best theologians of the Church.

All those opinions worked very well until a certain moment. When things become to fail, all their opinions were gone. None of them could give them a clear and obvious answer. Apparently opinions about God were not enough to face the truth about us and our limits.

Today I can say with confidence that the saddest and most dramatic funerals are among people that do not know God but have opinions about Him. They seem to be facing a tragedy based on the price of not following the truth but just their own imagination. When everything was about to be finished they didn't have the most important thing. They were missing true faith.

If today you are asking yourself a question about God, do not look for the answer in opinions. Look at the Word of God, at the Sacraments, at the tradition of the Church. The entire truth is there.
