"Peace be with you"

There is something very calming about the moment when Jesus Christ stood among the apostles after His resurrection. Those four words that He said to them combine everything that we could expect after the Holy Triduum. "Peace be with You." The depth of those words can only be found in our personal relationship with Christ. So what is the Peace of Christ really about?

Things are changing around us. Something new today is old tomorrow. News after news rants about problems that most of the time are not even problems. In the midst of this is the unexplained moment of reflection with one question - why? We often do not realize how deep this question is in us. Why do I have to run? Why do I have to be always first? Why? Why? and Why?

The apostles were very much afraid. They believed Jesus left them alone. But suddenly He appeared in front of them without any explanation, like nothing ever happened and gave them His peace. Just like that. I am tempted to say that He touched every single heart of those that were together.

Our world is looking for peace. We have so many organizations trying to bring peace between different groups of people. We have so many different laws that are supposed to keep our society at peace. We have protests for peace. But none of this works. I am tempted to say that they even make it worse.

But Jesus Christ didn't do any of those noisy things. He just simply gave His peace to all His apostles. All unexplained things didn't bother them anymore. The fear gripping the Jews was overridden. This peace gave them courage to go and proclaim the Gospel. This peace made them martyrs because they knew one simple truth: Jesus Christ is a victor and there is no power that can win over Him.

So, let's pray for the peace of Jesus Christ in us. Let's pray for those that live in fear for many different reasons. The answer for all of us is in Christ.

Fr. Thanks for good words. The Peace of Christ is the only thing that can calm our emotions; I know for me, its the only thing keeping me sane and unafraid these days. It is getting harder to interact with people(even family) due to our uber political world. My daughter is being ‘shamed’ for not wanting to get vaccinated. Being young, healthy, and not at risk, now makes her the enemy to coworkers and her friends who have already, or are on list to be, vaccinated and fear being around her.

I hope more people can find the Peace of God to guard their hearts and mind and settle the out-of-control emotions in some people.

I remember a fragment of a prayer that says, “The peace of God that passes all understanding....” ..... Jesus, I trust in You, all will be well.
