The Old Yeast

People do not like change. We like when all things go the same way, without any surprises. Our daily routine is almost like a daily devotion to our personal needs. It always reminds me about the three apostles seeing Jesus Christ on the Mount of Transfiguration - let's stay and put up three tents. Everything will be great; we will see Jesus' glory, Moses and Elijah. We will have food and health. Just let's keep it this way.

Unfortunately this is not going to happen. Things are going to change and our life is always moving forward. But there is one thing that is a blessing in these changes. It is the new "yeast" that comes into our life. The old yeast represents the earthly things and problems. It is always worried about the here and now. The new yeast comes from God and is changing us into a new creation, washed by the Blood of our Savior. The new yeast brings new fruits, opens a new call to salvation.

This Holy Week we want to receive this new yeast into our life. Once offered to us in Baptism, it often is forgotten or lost. By our Lenten repentance we are able to open our heart one more time to the grace that leads to eternal life. When the Jews were leaving Egypt they couldn't take any yeast with them. They had to leave everything related to their slavery. When we want to leave the old creation in us we have to leave the old yeast of the darkness of sin. Only the new yeast can give us new fruits.

This Holy Week is a time of change. We have to leave the slavery to sin and follow our Lord. His Kingdom is not from here but from above. The new yeast from Jesus Christ gives us fruits from above. This new yeast has to grow in our heart, has to change and clean all of our old customs and habits. Only in this way can we be new in God.

So, let God work on you with no fear. Each one of us is called to walk through the gate of the cross. It is better for us to leave this world and enter the world that belongs to Christ.
