We Hold This Treasure in Earthen Vessels, That the Surpassing Power May Be of God and Not From Man

This could be a very surprising message to all of us if we believe in our own power. In the last few decades there have been many empowering slogans telling us that we have power and we have to fight for what belongs to us. Even recent events in many cities have the same root. Together with this empowering message comes the belief that we can do everything and we should, otherwise we will lose everything.

St. Paul in his second letter to Corinthians tells us something completely different. Out treasures are in earthen vessels, very fragile, able to break at any time. We learn from history that this is truth. People always try to get power and collect treasures hoping that it will give them everything that they need. The biggest kingdoms and empires sooner or later came to the end, leaving only ruins we can visit as tourists.

So we have to find what is our treasure and why we cannot save it, but rather need God to save it. The one and only treasure that we have is our life. It is given to us by our God. All our material things come and go, our friends and even members of our family one day will leave us. Life is the only treasure that stays with us from the moment of our conception. This life is very fragile on a physical and spiritual level. We can die any time because of the virus, a car accident, poison and many more reasons. But there is another fragility and it is in our soul that we can die too, because of sin. We can try to avoid all wrongdoings, we can pray, fast, or do works of charity, but we cannot save our own life. It is God that can do it and only He can save us. Our fragile life is well protected by our Creator, The God Almighty. Our power comes from Him, our wisdom comes from Him, our love comes from Him, our life comes from Him. Everything that makes us better comes from Him.

We should be thankful to God for His surpassing power. God is Love and His grace reflects this truth. So do not worry about earthly powers because all of this will end. Rather turn towards God and you will be saved. He proved this when His own Son died on the Cross.
